Selecting Your New Symmetrical Spinnaker
What size do I require?
Determining the size of Symmetrical Spinnaker that is right for your boat is very easy. The only dimensions needed are your boat’s ‘I’ and ‘J’ measurements. The ‘I’ measurement is the distance from where the spinnaker halyard enters the mast down to the top of the working deck, not the cabin top. The ‘J’ measurement is the distance from where the forestay connects at the bow, back to the base of the mast.
For an accurate measurement, raise a tape measure up on the spinnaker halyard until it’s at the full hoist position and measure down to the working deck – that’s your ‘I’. Similarly, now measure from where the forestay connects at the bow, back to the base of the mast – that’s your ‘J’. In some cases boats will have spinnaker poles that are either longer or shorter than the ‘J’ measurement. In this case measure the spinnaker pole length and call this your ‘J’.
Now the luff dimension of your Symmetrical Spinnaker should be within 5% of the ‘I’ measurement. For example, if the ‘I’ measurement is 14.00 then the luff should be 14.00 (+/_ 5%) or between 13.30 and 14.70. In referring to the sizing chart below you will see that the correct sail to choose is our #7 or #8 Symmetrical Spinnaker which have luff lengths of 13.40 and 14.20 respectively.

About Symmetrical Spinnakers
Symmetrical Spinnakers are built to our top end radial-cut specification and come in a wide range of sizes at very competitive prices to suit the full range of yachts and catamarans. The spinnaker cloth, sail design and finish are to the same high quality as our individual ‘one-off’ symmetrical spinnaker production and it is ideal in wind ranges from around 110 to 180 degrees.
The Symmetrical Spinnaker has equal length luffs so the clew and tack are interchangeable, unlike the Asymmetrical Spinnaker. The tack is usually fitted to a spinnaker pole, the inboard end of which is attached to the mast. A control line called a brace is attached to the tack and led back through a turning block to a winch to control the fore and aft movement of the pole to ensure optimal angle to the wind. A sheet is then fitted to the clew and led back through a turning block to a winch to be trimmed.
If you are a cruiser, then this is the ideal downwind sail for you. Combine it with on of our proven and trusted spinnaker socks and it’s a one-man operation.
